The 582 Special is still a capable machine. A friend of mine has one and he uses it to push snow and mounts an IH tiller on it for his garden. If i remember right , 1st is like a creeper gear. I guess it would have to be to run a tiller.

I wouldn't part it if it was mine and it is in good shape. If the rearend ever goes out , you could always swap in a CI rearend and clutch system from another Cub.

The tiller is not mounted to the rearend like a CI rearend Cub would be. It is like the other aluminum rearend Cubs , it has a plate bolted to the frame and the tiller mounts to the plate.

I'll be careful how I tread here, but I had a JD 210 with the same tranny that was an excellent machine. I plowed and mowed with it in my teenage years. never had a problem and the tires spun just as easily as with a hydro.

There are some people who would love to have a good looking and running Red cub cadet. Id hate to part out something that works well. There is probably a collector missing that one special unit that would pay god money for it. Ive never had much trouble out of my peerless rearends. Im also not trying to pull houses down with them either.

I say keep it and run it, or sell it to someone who will run it. It is really a shame when people part out or scrap a perfectly good machine, especially if there is nothing wrong with it.

I've had my 582 Special for more than 25 years and she's been a real work horse. I mow almost 6 acres with it and plow snow in the winter. I try to take care of her and she's not let me down yet. She's got a little over 2000 hours on the meter.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
