Got to drive it a little last night. Trans works fine, PTO works, deck looks good and works, Carlysle ags in good shape on the rear, 5-ribs on the front, sheet metal and paint are all in good shape, no rust apparent on the frame or sheet metal, the rims are still white, even the wiring looks to be in good shape.

The engine starts right up, although the starter bendix is weak and sometimes doesn't engage. The carb, however is a mess. I have to work with the choke to keep the engine running, and when the throttle hits a certain spot, the engine takes off and over-revs. I'm surprised the PO didn't blow the engine. Once it over-revs for a few seconds (while I'm frantically trying to get it back under control) it starts sputtering and backfireing, like the valves are sticking, probably getting a little overheated.

I have already ordered a carb overhaul kit, a tune-up kit, manuals on CD, new hytran for the trans, and put a bid on a muffler on ebay.

It smokes a very little at startup, not unusual for flatheads, but no noticeable smoke while running. I think a tune-up, carb overhaul, and an oil change should give me a smooth running machine. A muffler will make the wife happier. It's the early KT17, so I plan to use Mobil 1 or another good synthetic oil and hopefully get a few more years out of it before I have to overhaul.

Pics coming on Friday!

Here are the pics I promised. Sorry about the quality. Morning sun was coming through the trees, so I was going to move it to a better spot, but wouldn't you know it, the starter wouldn't engage. Guess I'll be taking that apart and freshening it up as well. You can see my faithful helper there in the pics also.

I was wrong about the 5-rib fronts. They are just the original stock tires. Getting sort of cracked and old-looking. Probably about time for a new set...

I have never seen that style air cleaner on a series I, it does not have the plastic oil filler, i would look at the speck number on the engine. 24302 would be a series II

Only the very early Series I engines did not use that air filter. Series II air cleaners say "Series II" on them. Between that and the oil fill plug, that's a Series I.

Yeah. I was aware of that, but figured I'd go for it anyway. If I could have found a 782 or a 782D I would have preferred it, but I needed a mower. This will fill the bill very well.

I have been fighting off the urge to start modifying it. Thoughts of adding hydraulics, front, rear ports, deck lift, Cat 0 three point...you know how it is. Cheaper to just save my pennies and buy a 982D!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
