Took the 682 apart today to clean it up. Split tractor cleaned and pressure washed the rear and Hydrostatic transmission. Just wish that there was away to check and make sure that this all worked before I dump 1000.00 for a engine. As for a engine thanks for all the great advice the M18 seems like the way to go.
One reason i got this is to tear into the blown engine. I want to take it apart and disect it and learn. The previous owner took one head off and it came apart in pieces. I found 1 piece that looks like part of the cam. Which means it should be totally distroyed inside. He did tell me that when the engine blew that they just push it into the garage and their it sat for a few years. If this is true the rear should be good. is their away to check these rears out? |

I don't know of anyway to check the transmissions on these, but there is light at the end of the tunnel. If you do have a bad pump, it's a nonported one. They are easy to find and they can be had for cheap. A used pump shouldn't cost more than $25 + shipping. Plus all the pumps are the same. You can use wide frame or narrow frame pumps.

As long as the tractor still rolls, the pump is probably fine. If the rear feels "locked up", then it's probably broken.

got into it a little more today. Took wheel off and placed rear on stands. Everything turns freely. Hy tran oil in rear has no odd smell no water in it smells well like trans oil. Clear. So I should be good there. If It was bad want would I expect to pay for a Hyrostatic trans and rear together?

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
