I have a blown K301 as well that will need a rebuild.

Just so I am clear on what I am getting into, how do the costs break down? Do the estimates above assume going with a full suite of Kohler replacement parts, or buying a kit from eBay with Stens stuff. If going to a larger piston is needed, what is the avg cost a machine shop might charge for this service?

Edit - found this useful post here regarding parts and machine shop services:

If it is too far gone for rings to help... how much could I expect to spend resleeving it?
Plan to pay $125 to $150 to have your motor sleeved.

I have three K321s that are sleeved. All are strong runners.

The cost difference for a Kohler gasket kit and a Stens gasket kit is a few dollars for me. I prefer the Kohler kit because the crank seals hold up better than the Stens crank seals. I will not use a Stens connecting rod.....had a few rods broke and cause internal damage. The last few Kohlers I rebuilt use a Stens piston. Kohler pistons cost 50 to 75% more. I've know some who use the epay specials-most are trailer queens and don't get work hard like my Cubs do.

Machine shop price:
You will father ahead to a a shop that rebuilds Kohler motors. You may pay a few dollars more....worth it in the long run. My shop charges me $65 to $75 a cylinder to bore and fit piston. Check prices at the shop doing the machining work. I do my work when it comes guides. I buy the guidesand install them myself. Most times you will get a better deal on prices plus the shop is using parts that they are used to using. Some of the epay specials have the wrong parts in them. It can be hard and cost more to get parts exchange.

I used Kohler parts because I work and use my tractors and plan on keeping them, like everything else you buy in life you get what you pay for. With all the time and work involved in a rebuild I sure don't want to take an engine out and disassemble it again after a few hours of being back in service because I went cheap on components.

aftermarket parts may be perfectly fine but I don't know enough about them good or bad to have made a decision to use them. I don't know anyone personally who used them in a hard working machine that plows snow in winter, pushes dirt, mows all summer and pulls and drags heavy stuff around at times year after year.

more power to ya if you use them with good success.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
