I knew the ignition was weak, and since I planned on upgrading to the Chevy-style points, I ordered the bracket and cover, and today bought a set of points. The points bracket and cover installation were not exactly simple; in fact, I removed them and will contact the vendor to resolve a few issues with them. I cleaned up the old points and reinstalled them. I also installed a new spark plug. While I was playing around, I did a quick clean-up of the Walbro carburetor, and since the carb was off, I adjusted the valves; both were a little tight. I put everything back together and... no spark. I checked the wiring (which will also require replacement), and 12.6 volts were getting to the coil. Just for yuks, I installed an old coil, condenser and spark plug wire from my '57 Chevy, and now there finally was a nice fat spark. When I tried to start her up, it was spitting back through the carb; re-setting the points cured that. She then started right up and ran more smoothly than ever.

I have one or two more jobs I'll need the Cub for, but as soon as they're finished, I'm going to pull the engine and do a complete rebuild. The blowby is so bad, you get an oil shower when the dipstick is pulled out...

The oil shower is very normal if you pull out a dipstick on most any single/twin engine while running.
It is not a sign of a problem.
Blow by is usually represented by lots of oil vapor/smoke out of the crankcase breather tube while running

If that coil from your '57 Chevy wasn't the internal resistor type, and you didn't connect one externally, you're going to burn up those new points in a hurry.

Default Unlocking 127 Transaxle

Thank you, George and Matt. I'm not sure if I agree with you, George. While I'm not expecting a vacuum like you'd find on a PCV-equipped car, this is definitely excessive. My Snapper Yard Cruiser with a well-used (but well-cared for) ten year-old Briggs doesn't do anything close to what the K301 does. However, your response made me consider that perhaps the location of the dipstick being so low and short might contribute to the oil shower. All of my other engines, both vertical and horizontal shaft, have a much longer dipstick tube. Will I still get an oil shower after this engine is freshly rebuilt?

The Chevy coil doesn't have an internal resistor, Matt, but my goal was to just move it a few hundred feet off of my lawn to my shed, and I had reinstalled the old Kohler points due to some issues with the bracket for the Chevy points. Your point (unintended pun...) is well-taken, though.

Thanks again.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
