That is not an 1864 or 1863 shaft. Here is the info for the shaft you need.
Shaft, Drive, 20.38" Lg Part Number: 738-3098 ( 1863 &1864)

Jason drill and tap the pump shaft for a 1/4"-28 X 3/4" I use a right angle drill when I do them in the tractor. Just drill it till you get to the hole that the old spirol pin went in. Take your time because the shaft is hard and what ever you do, do not bust the tap.
This What I have coming out of a 1863 cub

a masonry bit has a carbide tip and will get you through the hardened part, then you can drill it like normal. I just had to drill a 9/16 hole into a trans output shaft I'm adapting a different transfer case to.
I think the 1862 runs an 18" shaft. that might be what yours is from.

I used a #7 drill and a regular tap. No hardened tooling. The shaft seems to be case hardened, not fully hardened.

Go slow, use some clean oil to lube the drill and tap. Use compressed air to clear the chips out of the hole, prior to tapping it.

Use a new tap, you should be fine.

Drilling and tapping is part of my day job, I've done quite a bit of it over the past 31 years, so I may over simplify it.

Nice job Mike!

I wish I had enough time to do the same. I have the braces sitting all painted in the garage waiting to go on. After I finish the engine rebuild I am on for the chipper/vac, those are next up on my list, both for the 1572 and the 1772. At least the 1572 has the driveshaft in it already.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
