Default One more step

The front spindles on the "O" are totally worn...at least one is, in the axle shaft. I had a set I got off of Ebay but the seller "neglected" to tell me that the top bolt threads had been thoroughly buggered up and stripped out. Hmmm...

Anyway, I've been out of town and now am sick, so I've not had much wrench time to work on the "O", and this was a light job to tackle (and I don't idle well) . I got the right sized insert kit and drill , tapped the new hole and inserted the thread insert... quite easy. It looked like the DPO had peened the top surface in hopes of getting a couple threads worth of "purchase" in the buggered out hole. I'll file that a bit smoother so it doesnt grind away at the thrust washer.

I measured the axle shaft and it measures to spec, and ordered 4 new bushings from Chris. Hopefully I'll feel better by next weekend and have the new bushings by then and can make the swap next weekend.

John

PS: Actually on 2nd thought, I don't think I'll do anything to the buggered up top surface. If I took too much off, the top of spindle would be lower than the top surface of the front axle beam, which would be a big problem. The washer turns WITH the shaft as the wheels are turned, so there'll be no excessive wear I don't think.

Default Hot weather work

Well, it's 102 out today and I have bronchitis ...sounds like a perfect day for some cub work.

I had gotten the replacement spindles and the zamak wheel bushings ready to install, and got one done today. To say that the old units were torn up is a understatement :-) The old spindle was about .030 deep grooved and the bushing inserts ovaled out as well. I had some new bushings to install, but there is NO way that they were going to go into the wheel opening.

I chucked them into my small lathe and took about .012" off the diameter and they snugged in nicely. It took some driving with a wood block but they're in securely now.

Only took about 5 min to button everything up. Not an exciting repair but one more step.

I noticed that the pivot hole for the front axle is WAY wallowed out. Is there a bushing that can be used to repair this wear? I imagine a relatively thin bushing tacked into the front crossmember would work.

Anyway, Duke, you'll be happy that there's one more yellow piece on this tractor . Sooner or later I'll have repaired everything and it'll be back to yellow and cream color.

John

Well, it kind of resembles a camshaft, but it's actually the other spindle, which was replaced today, along with the bushings.

I'm pretty sure I need a pair of O wheels too. Rust has had its way with these. Anyone have an extra set FS? If so, plz shoot me a PM.

Now, to eliminate the slop in the front axle pivot... I can't wait for that....

John I'll get that set out that I owe you when I get back from my mom's funeral. Sorry for the delay. I'll throw that wiring harness in the box as well.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
