Duke,
Just wanted to see the condition of the #1A that you have. Yea your running behind
Hey! I was in my local hardware store in Erie (Ferriers) getting some sst carriage bolts and ask the lady checking me out if they had Indian head gasket sealant. She said yep and took me right over to it. Noted that it is made by Permatex. Nice hardware store! It was $4.00. I have not tried it yet.
No tiller work tonight. Friend and his wife stopped over and we talked maple all evening.
Regards,
Chris

Todd/ folks
I had a little time on the tiller tonight. Camera angle and lights make the color a little off.
Some shots as it comes together. Case and bearings and shafts and chains are completely assembled. A few more items of hardware required. Hope I did not forget something that had to be installed prior to this point. That's typical of my builds Sorry my work area is a mess!
Regards,
Chris

I hope you aren't substituting SS bolts for any Grade 5 hardware, as hardware-store SS bolts are no stronger than Grade 2 bolts for the most part.

AJcombs,
Yea I wont want to dig in the dirt for at least a season or so.

Mike and I have been putting up tubing for maple syrup today and have about 2/3 of the 600ish taps hung up. Makes Christmas lights seem like a piece of cake. We should finish tomorrow, then I will be able to start tapping in a week or so.

Just got another 'CARE' package from AJ Gross. Thanks for getting this shipped so quickly! Box looks to be in great shape too, for these heavy gear box items. Haven't had time or ambition to open it yet. But looking forward to more nice Cub tiller parts. Cheryl was really happy that I had more Cub parts arrive today! NOT!!!! She knows I am nuts now.

I did two things on the tine assemblies. One inside set is in the de-rusting tank and really bubbling. On the other set I started sharpening the cutting edges on the tines. I was thinking of painting the tines black?? Any one Know what they looked like from the factory?

Will probably use grade 5 steel bolts for both the "pull" and "pivot" points on the tiller where the steel arms attach. The ones I took out had no grade markings that I could find maybe rusted to bad? The same steel bolts (1/2 inch) that I got from AJ Gross also had no head markings but did show some wear on then from the pivot arms.
Most of the other bolts should be fine with grade 1 or 2 sst since they are either holding the cases together or holding on the tins.

Regards,
Chris

If the heads are unmarked, then they are Grade 1 or 2. I would use that grade for the pivot bolts. I don't recall my tiller having Grade 5 bolts there, either. Because nearly everything IH used was Grade 5, any lesser-grade bolts may be that way for a reason.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
