Another thing: my 1650 has the self-unloading check valves, but the wheels did not turn freely when I picked it up from the seller.

As I understand it, when the engine is off, the check valves should release the rear end so it can roll. Is it because that linkage was frozen up, and the drive was engaged instead of being in neutral?

Do they typically only roll when in neutral, even when the check valves have dumped?

Dang it, just checked the tires and they are 23x8.5 - 12 and the tractor came with 23x10.5 - 12.

Narrower is not acceptable. Now I'm going to need to get some wheels.

Just getting started, my friend But really, there's a ton of stuff I learn here that isn't in the service manuals. They tend to be pretty vague on some things.

I would change the gasket between the hydro pump and differential housing, the hydro input shaft seal (and the charge pump O ring)...watch out for the tiny pin that drives the charge pump!!, and of course the rear cover gasket.
That's some good info, thanks! I hadn't addressed the input shaft seal and charge pump o rings, so that'll help. I'll have to add those to my order.

Make sure you fix the trunion, and install new inner and outer springs, and caps...this will help the tractor maintain a set speed.
I just put the order in for those springs today, because I never like old springs. But I didn't order the caps. I'll add them on Monday.

I've been looking at that trunnion, and have no idea how that thing works. I've seen other guys who had to fix theirs with welding and such. I can't see anything there that looks all bad. Maybe I'll get some better pics to put up. (edit 7/30/11 - you'll see later where I found the trunnion wear)

I really appreciate the info Wild Bill, thanks! I know it's kind of hard to pick out / answer the questions within all this info I'm putting up...

Looking great Dave!

I feel your pain looking for that pin, when I redid my carb I removed the choke butterfly and shaft as well (I strongly discourage this practice, leave in in place). Little did I know there is a spring and detent ball for the choke shaft. I dropped the detent ball (maybe 1/3 the size of a BB) on the floor, luckily the spring stayed put, it sure was fun looking for it!

Is the parts manual in PDF anywhere? I can't find it in the technical resources section of OCC. It's the only one I'm missing. I do use the partfinder at cubcadet.com, but it'd be easier to have manual.

if you pull the charge pump housing with the hydro pump in the horizontal position, you run the risk of that little pin falling out....
So turn it up to the vertical position, with the shaft input facing the ceiling to pull it?

Again, excellent info and pics, very helpful!

Default Thanks

Thanks Dave for your detailed project and your enthusiasm. I have just brought home a 1450 with allot of parts in a basket so your project and the answers you get from the forum couldn't be better timed. There's no such thing as a stupid question so if you don't ask I'll have to. You have no idea how much you have helped me with my project, so thanks again and can't wait to see it done and running
Ken

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
