I guess your furry little four legged helper was the inspiration for that color on the engine...LOL! I think it looks good that color, I went red because I was trying for a monochromatic paint scheme (well not exactly...I do have white wheels and black accents here and there).

I think I would match the tins to the block, but then again the red tins would look good too.

Your tractor is looking great, keep up the good work!

P.S. I have trouble remembering to snap pics too, then again when I do think about it, my hands are so dirty I don't want to pick up the camera or take a break and wash my hands...lol!

Sorry my garage is not a show piece!
Just ran the numbers and I am at the 90% complete stage of this project, with a lot of work still ahead, goal complete it in October. That last 10% is the killer on the details, in one of these types of things. Looks like your almost done but then several more things become apparent.
The cat, Gracie, is my main helper and usually gives me heck if I work past about 9:30
If you guys are out there I need some advice!
1. The tag on the side of the shroud is all but gone as far as the writting. Is there a thread or a place on getting a repro? I can read the stamped numbers and those could go over to a new tag. Then I would rivet on with stainless rivets.
2. I am going to try to use the existing wiring harness with some places repaired and maybe put the whole thing in that plastic wire loom stuff. Thoughts?
3. Thinking ahead to break in of a new engine. I see Matt G says use (cant think of the type) oil to start. I was going to use Mobile 1 regular oil to start (not synthetic). Yea looking forward to hearing this thing fire up in a couple weeks!

2. I would start over. The wiring on that series of tractors is notorious for badly deteriorating.
3. Straight 30W non-synthetic...if there is a Mobil 1 that is such a thing, that's news to me. I would just use the cheapest stuff you can find, as you're going to be changing it after half an hour, anyway...

Thanks for the good suggestions.
1. I will check with CC on the tag.
2. I was surprised that the wiring was in pretty good shape compared to several other Cubs that I have. Maybe it had been replaced once during its life. the plastic wire coating seems mostly in tack.
Do you build your wiring harness from scratch or do you by the new $100 ones?
3. Good suggestion on the oil I will check with NAPA and see what they have in the non synthetic.
I did get a little farther on the engine build tonight:
Took the data plate off the flywheel shroud and sanded/ primed and painted that area. that tag was a eye sore after I reviewed it more recently.
- installed the flywheel, screen.
- Points rod and points in place.
- Upper starter bracket and starter pulley installed.
- head gasket and head setting read for head bolts to dry.
Not sure on this color scheme with the flat black block and the red tins? May look real good for Halloween!
Also cleaned and painted a bunch of hardware. Its seems to be never ending!
Good news is I am looking through some of the parts I cleaned and painted a while ago.

I have always built them from scratch; I searched around and found cheap enough materials that I could probably make 3+ wiring harnesses for about $50 total. I also had the tools and patience to make them. It's not for everybody.

Your right on the mark here. I can build one ( wire harness) too. Getting the correct wire sizes, and if you really want to get the correct colored wire, it would take some time and patience too.

Folks,
I was able to get back at the K321 engine tonight after being out of town for the weekend.
- I took the screen back off the flywheel, I don't know why I thought it went on first?
- Torqued the flywheel nut.
- installed the drive pulley.
- Installed the head, Do you guys soak the head gasket in water first like the book says? I have this torqued down dry to 28 ft lb. in the sequence suggested.
-Installed the S/G bracket after taking the paint off the back. Trying to get that good ground for electric.
-installed the valve cover components , had to get a new green fiber filter at the dealers Yikes I didnt look like gold.
-Installed the points and cover ( Used some stainless steel hex head cap screws.)( Points not set yet).
-Checked the PTO spring position with functional gauge, and adjusted a little to get it correct.
-Installed the PTO bearing and locking ring, plus the PTO and the anti rattle clips. Secured with the cone points backed up by the flat end set screws.
- Secured the main fan shroud and the small tins on each side of the head.
-added the small cover for the opening below the carb.
It was a good night to work in the garage, A little to wet to mow around here.
Thinking about the exhaust system that Jeff put on his 149, I like that, and may try to do something similar. Would like to get the engine set in place soon but the wiring needs completed
