OK, and that's enough for tonight. I've got more engine work done, but I'm done posting for the night.

It's a lot of work, so I really hope it's of benefit to someone - and especially if it inspires and encourages noobz to take on such a project.

Oh, and for all the experienced guys - please be sure to add your tips / tricks / etc to help. And let me know if I did something wrong, so I can go out and disassemble it again. That'd be great! (right...)

EYI: CASE DC or SC just rolled by headed for the ALBION PA Fair. Nice! Maybe I will have a big tractor next year?
Dave your doing a great job and this should help me as I try to assemble my K321 within the next few weeks.

One comment: Even if the lifters are the same, it would be a good idea to not switch them, as they're 'worn in' to both the block and their respective cam lobes. It may not really matter, but it certainly doesn't hurt.

I found out the hard way with a command engine that they need to go back where they came from! It cost me another engine teardown, and $175 dollars worth of a new cam and lifters! Ate one lobe right off the old cam and dished out the bottom of two lifters! I will only make that mistake once!

Good point Matt. As I remember it, I had already installed mine under the assumption that they had to go back in the same place before I read where it said they were the same.

I think I had put one of them in a ziploc with the name on it, but didn't mark the tappet itself. So now it'd probably be impossible to double-check my work.

Pa Cooner - were the lifters on your command the same from the factory? Or was it that they are actually different sizes, and that's what caused the catastrophic failure? Just curious...

Same part number for all 4, just the holes were apparently worn to match the lifters.

Hi. I'm also Dave, and I am going to look at a '76 1650 tomorrow. I just joined this forum. The seller wants $700 for it but seems willing to negotiate. From the photos I have seen and what I have heard heard from the seller, it seems to be in pretty good shape. He told me that it is not a hydro, but I have not been able to find any evidence of 1650s which were not hydro. It does not appear to have a hydraulic control lever on the RH side of the cowling, so I am kind of curious to see just what this machine is. I would like to set it up for towing, snow-blowing and eventually put a bucket on the front. I used to work on these when I was in high school (a LONG time ago), even rebuilt a couple, and so I am pretty confident I can do whatever wrenching will be required. I have always really liked these machines and am somewhat excited about finally getting my hands on one.

Hey Dave - yeah, all 1650s were hydros. In the Quietline series, if the model number ended in "00" it was gear, and if it was a "50" it was hydro. So I'm not sure what he's selling. (?)

Dave, thanks for the confirmation. I guess I'll find out tomorrow. I suspect it's more a matter of the seller not being familiar with the tractor than it being some sort of one-off modified machine.
