Here are some better pics, now that I can work in the light of day and have the hood and grill off. Looks like the wear button is completely worn and the actual lever was pressing on the center of the clutch.

Also, according to the video I saw, I don't think the set screw holes aren't lined up properly.

Since I'm this far, I might as well remove the the whole thing and take a look at it. So far I know I definitely need a new wear button. Other thoughts?

Personally i would leave it alone aside from checking the bearing. Without the tool that comes with the rebuild kit it can be difficult to set it up. You will also need a very thin 7/16 wrench. The set screws only line up when you disengage the clutch and turn it. I don't mean to discourage you but if the bearing feels good I wouldn't worry about it. Just my

Thanks, I think the clutch is ok otherwise. I'm inclined to replace the button and be done with it, since the clutch did work ok while the button continued in its existence.

I agree, I'd leave the clutch alone and just get a new wear button.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
