How hard is it to change the gasket between the hydro transmission and the rear end assembly on a 1650 (the round one)?

it is not that hard if you follow the service manual procedure. be sure to have the hydro and the differential clean before you separate the two. be sure all sealing surfaces are clean before installation. if it all goes well, should be a few hours to complete.

It more time consuming then being hard. I just did it on my 1450. I slid the rearend out, tilted the rearend up removed for bolts and tube. Hydro came off easy. Cleaned up the gasket area. Installed the new gasket and bolt the Hydro back on, reinstalled the suction tube. It was a good time to repair the Trunnion bracket, welded it up and ground it to the proper size. Clean and repainted the whole rearend. |

Thanks guys. Mike That looks awesome. I have a leak from somewhere. I thought it was the suction tube, but everybody tells me that it is probably the gasket. I just fixed the trunion bracket because I had too. Then I decided to fix the steering. Now I have it in pieces, I figure I might as well paint it. What paint did you use?

I have been using a spray can, CC paint. It has been working out well so far.
I started taking my 1450 apart because the engine was burning oil. But then I figured I would just go through the whole thing. The engine is at the machine shop for a clean up, 10 over on the cylinder wall and 10 under on the crank, head surfaced and valves reground. I hope to get it back this weekend, and put it back together. Steering is rebuilt and upgraded. Front axle fittings and spindles cleaned and re-greased, new ball joints. Rear end seals replaced clean and painted. Frame was all steamed cleaned sanded and repainted. Its starting to all come together now! |

Do you guys use anything on the gasket as far as sealer goes. My Dad was always good for using Indian Head Gasket sealer on these kinds of things. |

I then decided to redo the steering, you could turn it a quarter of a turn before it would engage. I am doing the super steering upgrade with the thrust bearing and put a bearing in the top of the steering column I fabbed up. My column came right out of the steering head so I made a new one: http://onlycubcadets.net/forum/showthread.php?t=3358 My front left tire always looked like it was bent in so I took it off last night and yep, the spindle's bent. Somebody evidently has replaced one of them because it doesnt match the other. I keep leaking oil all over the floor and I figure I might as well fix it right and then repaint it before the rust gets it. I love the hydraulics for the snow blade and it has saved me a ton of work. How many cans have you used so far and are you sanding everything down with wet sandpaper? Thanks, Lyle |

I went thru 2.5 cans of yellow so far, and about 1.5 cans of white. I figure about 2-3 cans more of the yellow to finish. The gasket between the trans and rearend has one side that is sticky. This helps to keep the gasket in place when installing it. I did not use any other sealer on this gasket. The original seal lasted 31 yr with out it I figure if I get another 30 yrs I will be doing good lol ![]() |
