Tony

Good talking to you this AM. Just wondered how you made out with the Cubs you told me about?

Same to you Sam. No, I decided to let that 2284 go and the guy with the 2182 never responded. Just not quite ready to lay down that much money when I'm not sure that's what I really want...I mean need (don't let my wife hear that slip!).

Anyway, just to update. I polished out that crank journal and it is fine. But when I took a look at the cylinders and pistons, the #1 cylinder is pretty badly scored, not from the blowup, but from just years of use. There is no way the rings would re-seat if I put it back together. I could get it reamed just enough to remove the ridges, but then std rings would never seat well. If there's one thing I hate more than NOT rebuilding an engine, it's not rebuilding it right. So, I've decided not to rebuild the KT17. Parts anyone?

As for the 682, tomorrow I'm going to see if my K341 will bolt up with out too much trouble. It looks like it should bolt right up from what I see. I'll need to install a fuel pump, though, since the fuel tank is in a different place. This would be a temporary fix while I shopped around for an appropriate engine for the 682, and while I finish rebuilding my 1650. Long and short is that I really like my 682. While I wish it were a 782, I can always convert it as I go. Heck, while I'm wishing, I wish it were a 982D with front and rear ports and a three-point Cat 0! Maybe one day I'll graduate to Supers, but I really don't have enough yard for one. I just want one.

We'll see what happens tomorrow.

I think you are going to need a mount setup like this to put your K series in your 682 , this is how the 1282 has them mounted.

Sorry for the bad pic , but hope you can get the idea.

Some where I think I posted a picture of the Kohler generator that I used for parts, on my rebuild? Anyhow, that thing had a small 12v fuel pump on it. If you want to go electric let me know, I'll try and dig it out of the scrap pile.

We have a trailer load of scrap ready to go to the recycler, and it is in there. If you want it, I'll text my son and make sure he does not haul it today.

I'll hold it for you. You cover the cost of shipping from 48507 and it's yours. The thing is small, it may fit in one of those USPS prepaid boxes?

Lower right corner of this pic;

I also have a standard bore cylinder, I did not use. It is not scored, but had a little rust pitting in it, it may be fine, but I did not use it. It's not on the scrap pile.

You spoke of power steering, and wishing the 682 was a 782?

I am adding power steering to my 782, by cannibalizing a 2072;
http://www.onlycubcadets.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=17498

Had I not investing so much money in the KT17 rebuild, before I foung the 2072, I would be rebuilding the MAG20hp that the 2072 came with.

My point is I paid $350.00 for the 2072, this will get me (or my 782) power steering, front hydros, and dual rear brakes. And a rebuildable 20hp motor. I have sold $120.00 worth of parts off of it (and theres lots left to sell), that helps offset that initial investment. In your case a similiar donor would also get you the hydro lift (782 style).

This type of "upgrade" is not all that difficult, as most of the stuff is just swaping parts around, very little fabrication needs to be done.

If you do not want that big of a project, I will end up with some 782 left overs and could help you upgrade your 682, to a 782. (the lift valve and hoses from my 782 will be surplus).

If you want we can talk about those in pm's.

I took a look at the 1650 and the 682. It appears the rear is clocked a little differently on the 682 than the 1650, which makes the drive line a little higher at the engine, which is why the special engine mount adapters are required. The other method would be to re-drill the front bolt holes on the frame where the hydro mounts the axle housing to the frame and use the front hydro braces from the 1650. In that case the engine mount adapters wouldn't be necessary.

Nevertheless, I took a good look at things and decided the 682 really needs a complete overhaul. It's not worth re-powering as it is and I don't have time to overhaul the tractor right now. Not that it's in bad shape, but it needs love I can't give right now.

So, the 682 is going to be on the block, either whole or parted out. I may wait until I get the 1650 finished, just in case I need parts from it for that project, but it will go eventually.

After shopping around and pricing a bit, I ended up buying a JD 425. Sorry guys, but it is exactly what I was looking for. Expensive, but I love the tractor. Couldn't find the Cub I wanted in the price range I needed. The older, larger, better cubs are just not very plentiful around here, but JDs are a dime a dozen.

Thanks for all the willingness to help and the suggestions. In the end, I took the easy way out.

I didn't see a link. I got a link to an email address, but don't know what he's offering for sale.

Got my 425 stuck today. Need to take the ags from the 682 and put them on the JD. I figure the 425 is somewhat comparable to a 2072. It sure is a heavy-duty machine. I hope it lasts as well as these old Cubs.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
