Default 1250 K301 no spark

I only get spark sometimes. I need help to find the problem. It cranks but will not fire. I am testing for spark with a spark tester with a built in light. I have confirmed that the tester is working by using in on other working machines.

These items are known to be good
1. New battery
2. Coil
3. Key switch
4. Spark plug
5. Kirk transducer
6. Points set with multimeter
7. Spark plug cable is good

I swapped known good parts from another running machine so I know the parts above are good. I pulled the cover and the flywheel key is good. I bypassed the safety switches so they are not the problem. I cleaned the contacts with WD40 contact cleaner. I have good ground and I am showing 12v across the system. What else can I check before is replace the entire ignition system wiring?

Thanks,

James

On a Quietline Series tractor, install a "ground cable" from the chassis frame to the engine block.

Next make sure the Negative Battery Cable is clean, bright, and tight from the Negative Battery Terminal to the point of chassis ground on the frame.

Do away with whatever BS aftermarket ignition components you put on it.

File the points and time it. Make sure the coil is getting 12V to the + side with the key on.

Using a test light, attach it to ground, then put the pointed end on the - side of the coil and crank the engine. It should flash. If not, you have an issue with the points, the wire to the points from the coil or a bad coil. Could possibly be a bad condenser, but not likely.

If the light does flash, but you have no spark, then either the coil is bad, plug or plug wire. Make sure you ground the plug good while testing. DO NOT ground it near the spark plug hole, or the the fuel system.

If you find you really do have spark and it still won't run..... then you have a fuel supply problem.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. When I checked the wiring with the test light I noticed that I had 2 wires on the coil negative terminal when I only needed 1. The second wire was the old condenser wire that should not be connected when using the BS aftermarket ignition component. You saved me from tearing the entire ignition system apart. YOU ARE DA' MAN....

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
