Default 982--what to look for

Ran across a 982 with 3pt hitch and a 60" deck. The deck is an older style without the front gauge wheels, I would assume the rest of the deck is like the one on my 2072. It hasn't run in a few years, currently it is at a used machinery dealership and he has never heard it run. He pulled the air filter trying to get it to start and lost interest. My main concern is the engine, I know nothing about Onans, specifically any problems common with this series. How expensive are Onan parts? I would like to take a battery to check compression if the guy will allow. Also, I think it was overfull of oil, were these prone to getting fuel in the oil like on the KT-17 series in the 6/782 models. The guy wants $600, seems a bit high given the condition. The tires all hold air, seat is fair, no dents, hood hinge is broke. Have not checked belt, blade, and bearing condition on the deck. Is the price in line with the condition?

John, 982's are awesome tractors but the Onan's can get expensive to repair. Onans have a sound of their own when running and have great power but the weak link in the engine are the connecting rods and valve seats. I would say even at $600 not runnning that's a pretty good buy because of the cat 0 hitch being worth around $400. I say go get it!

Here is a good link for repair parts.

And a good rebuild link.

Id be all over it for 600. Junk the engine, find a Kabota d640 or bigger. 600 for the super and 700 to 1000 for a smoker. And you'll have less in it then what they sell for.

John

Just my 2 cents but I'd buy it. Try to get the Onan running as long as it doesn't need too much. If it runs enjoy it till it has a problem then I would drop one of those V-Twin Chinese diesels in it. If you decide not to buy it let me know and I'll pick it up. I'm looking for an 1872 or a 2072 with a crapped engine to do the China smoker thing with.

Wow, you guys surprised me! I figured I'd hear you could buy them all day for $300! Sounds like if I get it and it turns into being a major project to make it run I can at least get my money back. I'll see if I can get a deal going soon. He also has a 1282, never seen one before. Looks like a 6/782 with a single cylinder 12hp Kohler--deck looks good.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
