I finally broke down and bought a pair of 16/6.5/8 Firestone 3-ribs today. I also picked up a 2-spool valve to make this a twin-stick tractor so that I can add front and rear remotes for my power angle blade and dump trailer.

Got the Firestones on today. They put up a heck of a fight getting the second bead over the wheels.

I also disassembled the new used 2-spool hydraulic valve to replace the o-rings and increase the port size. For some reason JD decided to use 5/16” lines between the valve and cylinders so the ports on the valve are -5 which is very uncommon. I’ll increase them to -6 like I did with the valve I used on my Kubota. Then, I’ll use -6 to -4 fittings and run 1/4” lines and hoses.

The tri-ribs look good, really makes it look like a big tractor.

If you don't want to re-machine the valve, Discount has the fittings-

My original plan was to replace the single hydraulic valve with the new 2-spool valve. If there’s room, I may try to leave the original valve as well as add the new valve and have a Triple Stick Cub.

Pulled the gas tank off to start planning my hydraulic upgrades. There may be room to add the other valve, but there’s not enough room for the levers to actuate the valve. The levers I had in mind would be a rod inside a tube, inside another tube. There’s only about 1/16” clearance between the existing lever and the ignition switch and the fwd/rev linkage.

There is room for the new valve inside the frame under the tunnel cover. The levers for the valve will be in front of the seat and they’ll come through the fenders where the shifter block-off plate is. That way, there will be no visible modifications to the sheet metal. The only holes that will be added are 2 or 3 to attach a valve mounting plate. Those holes will be hidden by the tunnel cover.

Made a mounting plate today and clamped it in position to check clearances. I removed the return line from the original valve to make room for the valve and new lines will need made anyway. The original pressure line will remain.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
