Two things: 1.)That's a lot of weight to be hanging off of 3 3/8" bolts. Might want to make a brace.
2.)If your going to drive it off the rear and you don't use the rear PTO, why not just use a tiller gear box. That way you can use the same belt. Just unbolt the box and turn it 90°. The rear gearbox plate is made so you can do that. The holes are already there. (On the newer style, some of the old gearbox brackets didn't have both sets of holes.)

Rear PTO's on the gear drives run 540 RPM. The ones on the super's run faster...... 1800 I think, but I'd have to look.
Thanks for your input Johnathan. I'm positive that the governed rear PTO speed for the older Cub is 515 RPM according to the service manual. Just too slow to use without some major stepping up. I will be adding braces from the rear of the tractor frame to this frame.

I knew that this frame bolted to the rear end was designed to incorporate a rear gearbox for the tiller. I wanted to find one initially but they are just too expensive for this. I figure I will get this frame a little closer to the tractor so there isnt so much leverage and weight hanging off the three bolts to the rear end. I think two idler pulleys similar to a mule drive right underneath the chipper pulley will work fine. I'm thinking mule drive pulleys from an Original mule drive. They seem to have some girth to them

My hope is that i can get the one longbelt straight and tight enough to run it. But, if it dosent work, I have other options too. Thanks for the input guys!

Thanks, I'll tuck that nugget away for next time.

Ryan,
Neat idea. Can't wait to see if it works for ya.

Rear PTO's on the supers are 2000 RPM at WOT IIRC. I know the rear tillers and such are rated at 2000 RPM's.

Well, I finally made more progress on this project.

After I welded the chipper to the frame, I used a mule drive pulley setup from an old Original I had here for parts. I just used the bolt, idler pulleys and spacers and welded them solid directly underneath the chipper pulley.

After this, I added a front mule drive setup from a narrow frame to the front, and ordered a 1/2" x 176 inch belt to drive it. Nothing special, just a classic A belt. It makes the twists and turns very well. I made sure my PTO was working and I tried it out. WOW! These things are wild, dangerous, and fun!

After the test run, I added my belt shield using some 1/4 inch bolts and some copper spacers I made. I also added the chains to the top of the chipper to avoid it bending down and putting too much stress on the bottom bolts. It is very strong (suprisingly) and probably wouldn't need top braces but I think J-Mech's advice is good so something should be up top to help it out. I already made two #2 cart fulls of mulch with it already so it is working well.

Overall it was a fun project, and very simple to do. I wanted to go through what I did in case there is other guys out there with 59M's that have no mounting brackets and want a creative and "out of the box" idea to mount theirs. If anyone has any questions or comments about the project, please let me know or PM me!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
