I parted a 482 and it didn't have the three turn steering gear. All of the yellow 82 series i have been on has had the three gear , but not sure if they all have them. It would be nice if someone had a serial no. starting point.

I put a super steer axle under a 1450 that still has the two turn column and the combination of the two turn column and super steer axle doesn't work , the spindles will not turn far enough to hit the stops on the axle. I am going to put the three turn gear in it so i can get the added distance for the spindles. Never even thought about that !!!

I read that all of the flat fendered 110/112 JD's have the three turn gear ?? Do you know if this is true and do any of the other JD's have the three turn gear ?? I would rather pull one from a green machine , maybe that will save a Cub from being parted.

Looking forward to more on your build !!!!

As far as I know all JDs had a tree turn steering. But you must keep in mind that some of the JD ones turn the wrong way. I had to hook to the inner hole on the steering arm to get the wheels to move stop to stop. This gear came out of a 110 or 112.

The steering upgrade is complete. I got the new tires installed tonight despite the cold. Then I hat to take it out for a spin. The inner circle is 5 foot 4 inches across and the outer circle is 14 foot 6 inches. I lost my piece of paper that had the measurements of the old axle. I will turn with one finger when it is inside on the concrete.

Earlier in your thread you mentioned that the Super Steer Axle was taller. In looking at your latest pictures it looks like you are using the taller spindles. The early Cyclopes tractors around 1990 and earlier had the same axle with shorter spindles. I want to say SN 800K thru 819K or 821K? I've pulled two axles off of 1535's with the short spindles and the front end height was the same as my 782 and 1250.
I’m getting ready to do the same three turn upgrade and axle swap to my 782 and 1250. I purchased a steering box from an 1811. It has the 3 turn and same length as the 782 box. For the 1250 I might just put an 1811 box in if I can find one cheap. If not, I’ll go with the JD110 like you.
If these work out well, I’m going to put the SS axle and 3 turn in my dad’s 127. His axle/spindles are shot, the box needs rebuilding and he would like easier steering. Being that the 127 box is much shorter I’m planning on cutting down a JD110 shaft and installing it in the 127 box.

How do you like the JD 110 shaft length in the 1250 box? Also, did you use the pitman arm and cam follower from the JD110 box? Finally, is the diameter of the JD110 pitman arm shaft the same size as the Cub? In other words, would the NICE 605 bearing work?

From a quick search, it looks like the JD211, JD212, etc.. tractors use the same box as the late JD110's.

Chris

The shaft is only about an inch longer so it is not really noticable although I will have to add some sort of a shim under the steering wheel. I did not use the pitman arm or the cam follower out of the JD. The shaft size is the same although the pitman arm is a lot thicker than the Cub. I am torn on the use of the nice bearing. I just looks like it would cause problems down the road do to the fact that it is not sealed and that it will be getting very little grease if any. Doing all the work that I did this setup turns with one finger without the use of the bearing.

Thanks for the info. Once I'm finished with the 782 I'll probably source the JD shaft and upgrade my 1250 like yours.

I have been using the NICE 605 bearing on my 126 for 5 years and it's held up good. I did notice an improvement. However if yours steers that nice without it then why spend the extra money.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
