Default Tractor loses speed going up hill

My LTX 1040 has about 15 hours on it. I have changed the break-in oil and put on a new filter, which is a breeze with the easy fitting on the engine. The oil filter is also super easy to access.

Soon after I changed the oil, I noticed that the mower loses speed going up my 15 degree hill. I hadn't noticed before because I usually mow at a much slower speed while mulching my grass. However, I was in a hurry to put the mower away, and noticed half way up the hill, the mower began to slow down to a crawl.

I have spent hours on the 'Net to find directions on how to adjust the drive belt that connects to the CVT pulley, but have only found diagrams for parts lists. There seems to be no way to adjust the belt.

Does that mean I am probably going to have to replace the belt? It doesn't squeal or make any noise, it just slows way down!

Thanks for any advice you can offer.

Daniel

First off if you have 15 hrs on it, you need not work on it, it will void your warranty. There is no adjustment on them.

You will loose some speed, but not to a crawl. We have a steep hill we test our machines on, I mean like you'll flip over backwards on some spots.

I would take it to a dealer and let them look at it. With 15 hrs, it shouldn't do that. With 700 it should be noisy and a little slower.

If I find someone had gone in and done anything other than regular maintenance, Cub will not cover it.

mine slips but the belts are farly new 50 hours will belt dressing help?
well I tried spraying the pulley and belts today with auto undercoating and it kept it from slipping alot . I think dust from mulching leaves is some of the culprit.

This week I found out that by easing off the pedal ans pressing on it again, the mower moved forward at a faster speed. I guess it is a matter of finessing the pedal when it slows down.

My question is..what would a dealer do? Replace the drive belts?

Follow up question for Vince.. How does the CVT work? That is what causes the disc to contract and spread apart?

Id have to look up your sireal number up to look at what belt system you have. If you have a veratior on the unit, some times you cant tell if the berring is frozen in it Weve dont a lot of Huskys this year that showed slow travel speed untill we took the belts off.

Some times you can get a bad belt. Like the narrow frame belt for the PTO to deck. The belt is cut wrong, alowing i to be too deep in the v of the pullie.

Also the dust from mulching will be a problem. We had a 2500 series in a few weeks ago with a slight oil leak that blew back to the dash tower. Then when you cut grass the dust and fin clippings got packed up in the frame rail. End result you couldnt push the petal far enough forward. Ended up having to pull the fender pan off to clean it out.

So even if all the dealer dose is change the belts, or check for something bent, big box store drops off the truck, weve seen pleanty of them! Then they still try to sell them with out fixing them. You know your getting some one trained what to look for.

Heres one for ya. Guy came in the other day to get oil and filter. He was telling us about how may times his ltx was back to the big box store and was picked up for repairs. One time the place didnt tighten the blades, causing his spindels to break. then they tightned the blades and didnt tighten the self tapping screws in to the housing to the deck shell, so he tok it back to be repaired again. I told him that he could bring it to us to fix, seeing we have a big sign in the parking lot that says Cub Cadet. He hurried back to the big box store and got it and one of the guys in the shop fixed it and MTD bought him all new spindels, blades, belts, and guards.

Your dealer will do a lot for you. The one thing you have to remember, the 1000 series that you get at the big box stores and the ones at the dealer are the same units. Tey are the same price with the same warinties, why not buy it from you neighbor?

if you need me to look it up and walk ya trew it you can call me at the shop. Ill be busy the rest of the week as Ive missed 2 days to go to kawasaki school. Thats a whole nother post with all the cool eng's you get to tear down and fuel injection, ect. Im sure the work has piled up.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
