Hey everyone... I'm having some issues with my 125. Last winter I pulled the worn out pump that was in the origonal rear end and installed the pump from my 1989 Cub Cadet 1210. Everything went well until about 2 weeks ago. Now the top of the pump is sopping wet with oil. When I leave the tractor run, there is a constant drip from the bottom of the trans which is all coming from the top of the pump. I haven't pulled the trans out yet, and I can't see a whole lot because the 125 is a fixed tunnel. But it looks like the oil's coming out of what would have been the release valves on the origonal pump. But this pump has automatic release valves, so I don't know what to think.
Any thoughts would be appreciated, and any ideas on how to fix it too. Thanks, Kurt |

Seals on the pump is my thought. A release valve might actually be loose too. But if you remove the tranny you will know. How bad does it leak?

Really bad, probably 1 drip every 2 or 3 seconds... Do you have to torque the release valves to a spec?

They don't have to be really tight like say a head bolt as they have "O" rings to seal into the pump body, I just snug them, less than a spark plug
But they do leak, just like the manual ones. Clean things off and while it is running see if they are pushing oil out of the small hole on top, if so, the leaker will need replaced. |

A common problem with these Hydro Units with Automatic Relief Valves, that an internal O Ring goes bad and then Hydro Fluid oozes out the vent hole in the top. If this is the case, Relief Valve replacement is needed.

I had one rebuilt by a guy in Ohio, about a week ago. A machinist that takes them apart and replaces seals/rings, new ball, spring, laps the ball seat, etc. and reassembles for about $35,+shipping. Does manual and automatic release valves, and he's fast, sent on a Monday and was back to me on Friday! He has this service listed on E-bay. FWIW??

Thanks everyone for your input. It was one of the relef valves. I replace both of them with some out of a 128 that I bought a few weeks ago. Everything seems good.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
