V/R F and B wires switched. What did I screw up?

I feel like Homer Simpson. After fighting rust etc for the last 3 mo., I finally got the engine back in my new 149 project. Wanting (really badly) to hear this engine for the first time, I left the fender to be painted later and hooked up the electrical. The B and F were reversed and what looks like a solder fuse fried in the V/R. I figured this is repairable. The guys at radio shack can probably tell me.

OK, I'll leave the V/r out of it for now. Put the key swich on, jumped pos. on battery to A on s/g. It turned over put no pop or anything. Tried a few times and the coil felt warm. Later, coil showed 4.6 ohms That's about right isn't it? I'm not showing any voltage spike from neg on coil to ground while I crank it either. That could be because the cheap digital VOM doesn't register it fast enough.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Got a test light? Put that across the + and - of the coil. It will turn on and off if everything is working right. Pull the plug and check for spark. A peice of dirt in the points will stop it from running
