If you want hydraulic lift on a tractor, you would be a lot better off trying to find a 782 or something that already has it on there. The biggest reason I say that is because you would have to change your rockshaft and it is a REAL PAIN to remove.

I just overhauled the carb and found the main needle with a bent tip from some hamfisted PO along with a few crusties and a poorly set float level.

I had visions of the needle tip fracturing as I gently rolled it straight on a surface plate. It's as good as I can measure it, so fingers crossed.

Also cleaned up the ground wires and checked the gen wires as suggested. Grounds were corroded, but the gen wires were fine.

Almost forgot to turn the fuel valve back on just now... That would have driven me insane.

It's a little late now to fire it up, but I'll report back tomorrow with the results of tonight's fiddling.

Again, thanks to everyone for the help.

Sweet success.

New plugs and a carb overhaul seems to have done the trick. Ran like a champ up and down the street, along with some iceberg ramming to really load the engine up.

No missing, no bogging. Big thanks to whoever it was that suggested Autolite plugs.

Now I just need to finish the mower deck by spring.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
