Was mowing the lawn yesterday with my 1450. All was going along real good and then I noticed a slight miss in the engine. The motor kept going for another minute and I noticed it again. Then for about another 3 seconds, then the motor died, like someone turned the key off.
Well, it was a bit warm out in the sun and I needed something to calm my nerves. To the refrig for a cold one. After getting calmed down, went back into the yard where the 1450 died. Started looking at what was the problem Couldn't get the motor to even roll over. So, I started with the Neutral Switch, that seemed OK. Looked at the PTO Switch, that seemed OK. What in the hell is going on here. So I took a screw driver out, and jumped the Starter Solenoid, The motor barely wanted to turn over. Lifted the seat and found one of my ground cables with a broken end (at battery). So, I put an new end on and no improvement. So...now it is time to get the Van over to the tractor with the Jumper Cables. Jumper-ed the tractor and it started right up...hmmmmSo, I was noticing that the Amp Gauge was in the middle. I revved up the motor and no change in the Amp Gauge. So, now I am thinking, with the battery that low, I should be charging like mad. I reach around to the V/R and jiggle the wire connector. Lo & behold, it is now charging, way into the charge position. I jiggle the connector some more and notice the charging goes in and out. Ah ha.....dirty or loose connection at the V/R. Clean the connector up and now it remains charging. Mowed another hour and still was charging slowly building the battery back. NOW....the conclusion to this adventure, the motor died from running low to the point where it wouldn't provide enough voltage for the HV Ignition Coil. This was in turn due to the V/R not working. I don't always look at the Amp Gauge to see if there is a charge going on, but from now on I will.
