Breaking belt problem

I have a 1250 with a 38" deck. A chart on one of the cub sites says that the mule drive belt between the pto and the deck should be 3/8" x 81" . I had trouble getting an 81" belt so I tried an 80' one ,twice in fact . Both times the mower worked for a short time and then the belt broke. I thought there was enough adjustment to use the shorter belt. Is the problem the belt length or have others successfully used the shorter belt? If it's not the belt length, does anyone know of other reasons for this to happen? The first time it happened I was cutting heavy growth and thought I'd overloaded the belt. But the second time I cut grass for about 10 minutes. Then the deck was disengaged and raised and there was no grass beneath it. But as soon as I engaged the pto again, the belt broke. I would appreciate any advice you can offer.
