Snowthrower drive questions
I'm mounting a QA36B on my 147 and naturally it needs work. The cutter bar is worn and needs turned over, no problem but I'll need to replace the mounting bolts, too. Actually wound up grinding three of the seven off.
The chute needs cleaned up so it doesn't catch snow, no trouble there. I'm going to dismount that and smooth up the mating surfaces, too, so it turn more easily. The gear box has given me pause though. The drive shaft key is a little loose in the small gear. Needs a new key and very probably the shaft too, but I'm reluctant to be heavy handed getting it apart. I've looked in the resources area and haven't been able to turn up a service manual for it. Looking in the wrong place maybe? Also wasn't able to find any threads on either tiller or snow thrower gear box rebuilds (I know they're very similar). There's a clip holding the gear on the end of the shaft, and the gear would slip off the end no problem, but the shaft is held tight. Is that a pressed in arrangement? Or is it just recalcitrant having been in there who knows how long? So can I just remove that clip and tap the shaft out or is there something I need to know? Edit: I did find a half page of info and a cut-away view in the 1X6/7 service manual. Also planning to fill it with J-Mech's grease/gear oil mix, but how much? Fill 'er up? The unit has seen a good deal of use, but the previous owner did appear to know how to use a grease gun and it has been stored out of the weather so it's in fare shape. The bearings all turn smoothly and except for a worn cutting edge and a couple of loose set screws it's usable.
