Hello
Not sure if im on the right forum or not but i picked up a 3184 over the weekend and need some advice on parting out or fixing up. I originally started looking for a Horizantal shaft Kohler engine on craigslist etc when i became interested in these cub cadets because everytime i did searches, a cub cadet would pop up. The older cubs actually caught my eye and then one came up for sale that had an 18hp command that if anything else i could use the engine to repower a Walker zero turn that ive owned for awhile. Anyway its a 3184 with 350 hrs with a belly mower. Engine runs like a top and the machine was clean from the outside (with exception of needing decals) but underneath was a hydraulic mess. Apparently something has leaked (or blew up haha) causing the entire undercarraige to have a inch or so worth of fluid and dust/grass build up. Its been leaking from somewhere for quite awhile. The power steering and deck lift works flawless but it will not pull in forward/reverse. I can feel it barely trying to pull but i didnt try too much to keep from possibly damaging it anymore. it didnt make any weird noises, just wouldnt pull. After i cleaned everything up underneath real good, i did notice theyre was a hydraulic filter under there and it looked like it had never been changed. The fluid was low. Clean on the dipstick but the fluid barely touched the tip. So i left and went to pick up some CC hyd oil and a filter to do a fluid change but got held up and didnt get around to it and i guess i need to add fluid til i can find the leak and fix before i change fluid? So i guess after all this typing what im trying to get at is whether or not im probably looking at a pricey fix. I gave 400 for the mower and if i could get back in running order whether or not it would be worth what id probably have in it to fix givin worst case scenario. Maybe its just low on fluid and needs a leak fix, i dont know yet. Id actually like to sell and find an older cub maybe 982 or a diesel. Thanks in advance for any advice or input on this machine! |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
