Someone help me out here if I'm missing something.

If the intake valve is "sticking" (and I'm not saying that it isn't). You aren't really to the point yet of adjusting it.

If the valve is sticking shouldn't it be removed and have the stem and the guide cleaned first?

I'm not saying the guys are wrong, but I'm leaning more toward thinking that there is crud under the lip of the valve preventing it from closing (or something worse).

If you rotate the engine with the valve cover off, it should be evident (from the distance between the valve and the tappet) if the valve is being held open, stuck, or just out of adjustment. Out of adjustment in the case that the valve isn't closing would mean that the end of the valve would always be touching the tappet.
