My 86 has decided it doesn't want to play anymore. Since I have got a couple of months ago it has always been hard to start. It would take a couple of minutes of cranking, hitting every once in awhile at full choke then half and then a some black smoke and she was off. Once it was running it wouldn't miss a beat.
Last weekend i started off in too high a gear with a loaded trailer killing it and now it won't start or even hit. I had assumed it was a carb issue but hadn't spent the time investigating yet. Last night I checked plug gap, point gap, tore the carb down cleaned it and set to base spec. The only thing I didn't do was check the timing because I could not find the inspection hole. I can see the points sparking and the plug has good spark when held against the head. After an hour of trying to get something I had gas running out of the muffler and carb throat but very little if any on the plug. I am leaning toward a stuck valve due to the lack of fuel on the plug but the carb has suction if you cover it up and the spark plug hole will blow your finger off and the muffler puffs. Before I tore into it I wanted to see what y'all had to suggest. The only thing I didn't try was putting a little gas in the spark hole to see if it would fire. According to the PO it sat for a couple of years that's why I assumed a carb issue but its clean and looks good to me. It sounds the same while turning over and with the plug out I can't feel anything out of the ordinary while turning by hand. Any suggestions would be appreciated. |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
