Saratoga/Upstate NY Newbie
Hello Gents (and Ladies):
I live in upstate NY, have a very understanding wife (who lets me buy toys now and then), three great kids (8, 13, 15) and two goofy dogs. Bought an 1100 ten years ago, the Briggs & Stratton engine blew and I hired a guy to put a Kohler engine in it 5 years ago. Now the PTO clutch in the Kohler engine is shot and my repairman said it will cost me $600 for a new one or $400 for a used one. Not sure it is something I want to tackle so the 1100 just sits there but drives great...just no mowing with the PTO. As a result of the 1100 breakdown, I figured why spend $400 plus on a PTO clutch when I could probably buy a Cub for $400....so in browsing the local ads I found a 109 Hydro for sale. Not a pretty specimen (but I found beauty in her) and bought it. It runs strong, mows great and needed a battery. After mowing twice last week, the left front ball joint came out of the linkage and I tried to get it pushed back in. To no avail it kept coming out when I turned the wheel. So I saw that you guys have had that problem and I went to the McMaster Carr website and ordered four of the ball joint linkages (as per suggestions on this board). I may be back with more questions but I have a feeling you guys are very well suited to answer my most elementary questions (as I am not a mechanical guy...I'm a paper pusher for clients). Thanks for all the great advice you have offered others. It really does help those of us who are new to this. Who knows, I may even attempt a restoration on this 109 if I get the courage up.
