Next thing: adjust the carburator, and see if there is any fixing to the wobbly throttle shaft. Hopefully can be fixed short of a new carb?

Not to be a smart a$$ but you could of bought a new carb. and change back with what you spent on unnecessary parts.
A simple piece of crocus cloth pulled through the points would of done the trick.
But no matter it is running now and all is well.
Enjoy it.

If you had seen the condition of the old stuff, I bet you'd gladly replace it all.

Any insight on the throttle shaft? Source for parts, or a good carb replacement?

Seeing your avatar brings back some good memories of mowing/baling lots of hay in western NY with a 656.

I bought one of the $38 carbs off mebay and it seems to be working fine. It's adjustable. The choke lever is upside down, rendering the choke cable useless, but since your able to reach the carb from the seat, you can choke it by hand. As far as all the new parts, I'm the same way. It's not like they cost a fortune and you know you won't have any problems out of that end for a while

To each his own, I'm old skool, it it ain't broke don't fix it.
Sometimes replacement parts are not up to original standards, other times
they redesign to eliminate a weak link and are better.

I just will not through parts @ something in hope that the shotgun approach will hit the target.
But hey, it is running and everybody is happy.
As far as the worn throttle shaft bore in the carb. body, do a little searching here, there are several posts on putting a new bushing in the carb to tighten up the looseness.
IIRR the bushing is a hillman product available @ larger hwd. stores.

As far as a new carb with the choke linkage *180 off, there are several ways to correct that easily.
The linkage can be removed, turned and re peened.
or another small piece of metal made to duplicate the tab and either silver soldered or soft sweat soldered to the existing one in the desired position without dismantling the choke butterfly.
Also depending on the location, a longer choke cable can be installed to pull from a different side to accomplish choke activation.

Some of the cheap knock off carbs are being sold with two choke shafts. Either can be installed to make the choke lever face the right direction for the application. I just installed one on my 149. It is a perfect match to the original, and it tuned in well. the Kohler 14 hp runs great with it.

Thank you for that, DieselDoctor. I saw that carb on eBay...... you have convinced me to go ahead and order it.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
