Default Free driveshaft pin bolts anyone?

So when the pin flew out of my driveshaft I bought a grade 8 bolt to get me up and running for now. Of course, buying 25 of everything was cheaper than buying just one (good ol Amazon). So I have 24 extra grade 8 hex flange 1/4" x 20 x 2 1/2" bolts that I don't need laying around. They are a little long, but doing the trick just fine.

If anyone needs one or two, I'll ship them to you at no cost...the help I've already received and will get in the future has been incredible. Whether you need it now or just want to stash it to get out of a bind later, please take them. I'll send the bolt with stainless washers and lock nuts. I've got 10 padded mailers collecting dust, so first 10 that need it get them.

PM me with address and let me know if you want one or two.

Putting a bolt in place of the spirol pin is a bad idea.... for you, or anyone else.

So..... here's my question:
If instead of driving to your local Ace Hardware (or whatever) and getting bolt, you order bolts online.... but of coarse you can't just buy one..... Why the heck wouldn't you just jump over to cubcadet.com and order one of the proper part and fix it right the first time!?!?!?!

Seems to me like a poor fix and a waste of money.

The proper pin is a dowel pin. This is from parts tree.

Cub Cadet IH-19837-R2 (replaces IH-19837-R1) Pin, 1/4 X 1-1/2 Dowel
Your price: $4.69

Just a heads up, the reason for the slot in the coupler is to allow the shaft some fore and aft movement. It appears that you have that bolt tightened up solid. If you want to continue to run it with the bolt at least back it off a bit. Also you better plan on replacing the coupler and drive shaft at some point in the not too distant future. Jeff in Pa make replacements at a reasonable price, you can read more about what he offers in the parts area of the site. Here is the link.

My father-in-law is going to weld up my coupler, and I figured a new pin would just fall out again until the repair was made. I actually did go to my two nearest hardware stores and they had bolts that would have fit, but not grade 8.

I'll back the nut off a little Sam, thanks for the heads up.

Just noticed that you had a previous thread about your drive shaft.

I guess there is no need for us to rehash the same old same old.

I like the ones Jeff in PA makes...good stuff and not that expensive. Honest guy too. The bolt is a redneck-farmer repair IMO.

Yep and it will eat the drive shaft, but if it's probably already toast........ Not my tractor and not my problem. He was warned before so it is what it is. I recall the old Fram filter commercial " You can pay me now or you can pay me later".....

No worries Sam, when it lunched the pin I stuck the old worn out shaft back in. The new one from Jeff is on the shelf with the old pin drilled and driven out. I did it to get it back to the shop. That was months ago.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
