Default HDS 3185 opinions

I have a guy wanting to trade me a HDS3185 for a Troy Bilt Horse tiller I have for sale. What is the good, bad, and ugly on these machines? His has 18 horse Briggs,54 inch deck needs headlights. He wants to trade straight up for my tiller and give me $200 cash. Tiller has all new seals and gaskets, new tires and paint with a new 7hp engine from Northern Tool.
Any opinions welcome!

I'd take it.. especially if he's footing another $200. the 3185 has an 18 horse briggs vanguard engine. shaft drive, hydrostatic... hell if it mows you are getting a steal. but if he's stupid enough to want to trade for any tiller then at least drive it around the yard, up and down hills and mow some. Obviously check for leaks everywhere, jack up the rear and spin the tires listening for sounds that shouldnt be there (grinding).

The 3185 was built in 1998 and has the 18HP Vanguard with the non-locking aluminum rear. Do you know the condition of it, how many hours are on it and the condition of the deck. I'm thinking I would do the trade but that is me cause I like those tractors. Most Horse tillers I see bring less than $750 and if this tractor runs well and isn't beat up it should bring more than that. Got any pics?

No pics yet. I usually get between $700 and $1000 for the Horse tillers I redo. This was the lower priced one without any extras and I had it priced at $700.
I have not had any dealing with the 3000 series Cubs but thought it might make a good flip or maybe replace the green demon in the fleet. Don't these tractors have a shaft drive deck? How strong are the hydros?

Yes, the deck is shaft driven. They say that these machines will do ground engaging work and they did come with a cat 0 as an option. The 54" deck is the more sought after deck. They also have power steering, tilt wheel, hydro lift and a foot controlled hydro.

This one does not have the locking rear that people have been having problems with and it should be trouble free.

I actually have the 3184.. same as the 85 except with the Kohler Command Pro 18. Right now I don't love it but that's because of a bad head gasket. Other than that I do love it.
Don;t expect to engage the ground without spending a good bit of money though if that's your thought. the 3-point parts are very pricey.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
