OTOH, below the grime seems to be a pretty decent tractor.

A power washing and some rubbing compound would bring back the yellow shine (and likely the desire to fix it). It doesn't have to make $ sense to be worth doing....

its a good deal if you paid $150. the blade itself is worth $75-100. I agree that, with what i can see of the engine,i would tear it down completely and rebuild it. it looks suspect.

No matter what, you got a really good deal on all of that. He basically sold it to you for scrap, and it is worth more than that. Before rebuilding that engine and worrying about it, check the obvious--see if the drive shaft is hooked up and if the pin in it is still good or sheared off and try turning the engine over by hand. That grime behind the S/G could just be from spilt oil during an oil change and collected debris afterwards for a while.

It might be just a loose drive shaft or something like that.....I bought my 126 and the guy told me the engine was blown because he could see the top of the piston after removing the spark plug and it didn't move when he turned the engine by hand. I looked at it with him and told him the piston was offset from the spark plug and I cranked it over and told him that the engine wasn't blown, but actually had pretty good compression. Then I said, it's a good tractor--why don't you keep it and enjoy it a little. Lucky for me he said, "That's alright, you can buy it for $200 if you want." So I got it, IH wheel weights, IH windbreaker, snow plow, deck and a very solid running 126 for my money. Sometimes, it's just something overlooked by the PO who doesn't want to invest a little time or a little $$ to get a wonderful tractor out of it.

Well, I'm glad you have another cub in your fleet and that it will get some TLC that it needs!

Keep us posted,

Cub Cadet 123

Thanks for the advice everyone, it is most welcome. I will keep you updated. I will get to working on this one as soon as I get my 105 out of my garage which needs a new hydro cooling fan and a carb adjustment. Then that 105 will be sold to my neighbor which will leave me with the broken 125 and my running 125 with a K241 in it.

When you said "blown" I thought you meant "supercharged", actually saw one yesterday browsing around. It was a bad joke, but my daughters tell me all my jokes are bad.

I just bought a few sets of those wheel weights at Lowes. They were for MTD series 800 Garden tractors (with 23" tires). 50 lbs each. Probably a universal wheel weight and MTD put them in their own box. I don't recall that mine had any logo or stamp on them anywhere, but I haven't looked that close.

They had them on clearance for $25, so I had to pick up a few sets. It was kinda funny because they had June 2002 stamped on the boxes and I just purchased them a few months ago. They sat in the store for 11 years as far as I can tell.

I would do an autopsy and find out what you are dealing with. My experience has always been to look at the last repair first.

Worst case is that you need to do a total rebuild, as long as there are no extra holes in the block you have something to work with.

It's been a year since the OP had last updated this thread. Hope he's still doing well.

Ha! I didn't catch that. I wondered how there got to be so many replies so quickly.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
