Depends on what you want to do with the tractor. If you want it for a show piece, then get the 982. if you want it for a worker, then get the 2072. The 982's are a capable machine, but it lacks some of the options that are standard with the 2072.

The 2072 came factory with dual brakes, power steering, and dual hydraulics. options were 3pt hitch and rear pto

The 982 had the following options - dual brakes, power steering, dual hydraulics, 3 pt hitch, and rear pto. These were not stock on any 982, they were always an option.

I like the 2072. Kohler M20, dual hydro, power steering, dual brakes - sounds like a good package to me. The aluminum rear can be switched out with a good days' work. Either way, you're going to be a winner - both are great units.

Do what I'm doing. I have a 2072 that I'm building into a 982 clone. I have a 3pt from xtrememotors works for it but no pto. Factory kohler engine, dual brakes, power steering, dual hydraulics. I'm building a restore mod working tractor not a show queen though. Just my thoughts but for collectability the 982 for all around usable machine with out adding a lot the 2072.

The 982 is rarer but I would get the 2072. The 982 has the Onan which is a good motor but I prefer the kohler that's in the 2072.

If you're looking for a worker and not a trailer queen, go for the 2072.

I've had a 982. It was a good tractor, but could be a pain to steer when I had the blade up front. They didn't have internal power steering or power steering from the factory. There was an add on option for a 982, but they are hard to find and pricey. The Onan parts are very expensive when you have any engine problems. The three point is 982 specific also due to the fact it has a cast iron rear (red ones) versus the aluminum rear on the newer supers, 1872, 2072, 1572, 1772.

I've never had a 2072, but do have a 1772 which is practically the same tractor less the engine, gas versus diesel. The power steering is the cat's meow. Also the three point and rear pto are nice. The 2072 would have dual hydraulics from the factory.

If it were me, I'd go for the 2072. If I liked the 982 so much, I'd still have it. Sold it a year ago. The 1772 on the other hand is going nowhere. Really depends on what you're looking for and what you need. Good luck and keep us posted on your choice. Oh, and we love pics and Allen loves his new 1872!!!!!!!!

BTW, on a side note, didn't the early 2072's come out with the Onan engine?

Default 982

i guess all the guys with the yellow & white are trying to drive the prices down on the 982's sounds like they dont like them or cant get one so they talk every body out of them.as for the motors in the 982 it go's on what you like i guess ,ive never had my onan give me a problem & i put it threw heck & do stuff with my tractor "I KNOW YOUR NOT SUPPOSED TO DO WITH IT " i pull fence post's with it,my truck's when they brake (f250 excab 8ft.bed 4x4) so as long as you change oil & filter & tune it up insted of waiting for it to quite on you then doing matinance.

72-149,
I cannot speak for the other guys but I can state my opinion. My reasoning for picking the 2072 is simply based on that fact there are more of them around(however here lately I have looked at several 982s for sale) and the majority of the 2072s already have items most guys want to upgrade on the 982. I don't think that has any effect what so ever on price what affects price value is availability and demand. There are a very limited number of 982s and demand is high so the price will stay up. As far as not being able to buy one I don't think so at all I have passed over several 982s and there are several listed for sale on various sites right now. I agree with you maintenance is the key to any engine but again the Onan parts are harder to get and cost more. All this leads me back to my original post if you want a tractor based on collectors value and high cost buy a 982 if you want a solid working machine with lower cost buy a 2072. Option 3 is if your are like I am and like the red international look build a clone tractor with the best of both worlds. Actually I hope more guys buy the 982s and leave the 2072s for me LOL. By the way you have a very nice looking tractor!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
