I would also lean towards the ignition coil but the Kohler manual and some web searchs state that a compression test wont nessecarily show a bad gasket so that has me questioning everything. Im going to the cub dealer tomorrow and see if they can check my coils and what it costs.

I'm pretty sure it's ignition. If the head gasket was bad I don't think you'd see the fouled plug. Pull both plugs, connect the plug wire, and ground it and check what the spark looks like when cranking. I'm guessing you'll see a normal fat spark on the good side, weak spark on the bad side.

Dave01,
I ran the test you suggested and there is noticeably less fire on the Left side as compared to the Right. I also noticed the left side plug wire is made different from the right so I wonder if one of the coils has been changed in the past. I am going to start disassembling every thing to get to the coils and check all the wiring as I go. Getting to them seems like it is gonna be a major hassle. Thanks for the tip! |

OK guys Ive got the 2284 up and running and been using all spring but Im having charging issues still. Ive ran the forum search and read several posts but Im really confused. My amp light comes on with the head lights or the PTO engaged. Last week the cub died twice but restarted, today it died then barely restarted like the battery was dead. When I shut it off guess what dead battery. I charged the battery and it fired right back up but I dont think its charging correctly. The battery is brand new one month old. I dont have a volt/ohm meter so I will have to get one before checking the pins like I read on some threads. Looking at the wiring diagram I see a rectifier and then also a volt sensor. The rectifers are cheap enough so would it be best just to start with a new one considering the tractors age? I have a spare volt sensor on a parts tractor but I dont know if its any good. If someone knows the link to the exact thread I can follow or one of you electrical experts could help I would appreciate it. Electrical issues are my weak spot and Im not good at figuring them out.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
