I plan to repower my early build Onan 2072, it has 1000 hours on it and is still running but has its minor issues. Id like to preserve it by replacing it now rather then letting it self destruct.
I contacted SEW about what the correct repower kit would be for this configuration. They were no help since there is no literature about the Onan B48G ever existing in a 2072. Their words not mine. I am leaning towards ordering the repower for a cub cadet 982 since it is basically a 2072 with the Onan and no power steering. Any input from guys more experienced then me would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance. |

You could use a repower kit for a 1872 and use an extreme clutch.

You could re-power with a Kohler M-20 that was mainly used in the 2072's.

Or the more popular M-18, but they are both old skool, that some feel are outdated.
They both would be a bolt in, and you would not be displeased with the results. Then again the old onan in there is a good ol'horse also. ![]() |

It took 30 years to put 1000 hours on the Onan and it should last at least another 1000+ hours. Onans are great motors and put out a lot of power. Why not repair the minor issues with it? What problems are you having with it?

I do really like the onan but it is starting to show its age. Ive been chasing oil leaks for the past 100 hours and its getting old at this point.
I would prefer to repower with something that is brand new and the 23hp brigs seems to be the most popular from what I see here. No one has mentioned this option yet. |

Zippy put a 23 Vanguard in his 1872 and loves it. I’ll see if I can find the link. Are you going to sell the Onan?

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
