New to me 124

Hey everyone. I am new to the forum and very new to Cub Cadets so work with me! With a goal of having a runaround tractor I purchased a Cub Cadet last month for $50. I started a thread in December regarding a LT 1715 that I picked up locally with a deck. It was running but the condition was not fully disclosed and it has some major wiring issues. It runs when I jump it using the Starter but the PTO and Ignition switch are a work in progress. Through my research and help from this forum I am still trying to fix that but will sell the tractor when finished or stuck.

Because of you enablers, I immediately realized that I wanted a Garden Tractor and have been on the look out for one. I found a 124 in nice shape locally and I will be bringing it home tomorrow. It starts immediately and runs really well. I was looking for something that could pull around my log splitter and other yard attachments instead of using the zero turn and I would like something that can push snow since we are on a private culdesac with no plow service and I have a decent size driveway (concrete and a gravel horseshoe) This was the reasoning behind the purchase of the 1715 anyway.

For $500 total, the 124 is coming with the following
- 48" Mower Deck
- QA 36 Snow Thrower - Not pretty but works well and seems tight but could use some paint
- 42 " Plow Blade
- 3 Point rear lift (parts look complete, not installed)
- wheel weights
- Tire Chains

Spare Parts Bin
- Extra starter/generator
- Carburetor
- Muffler
- Blades x3
- Some other odds and ends

I am hoping to have better luck with this one and I would love to have it look like some of your tractors. I will get some pics up later tonight. Hopefully I did better on this purchase and based on the prices for the attachments, I think I will be ok (providing they all work).

Looks like a decent 124 with the headlights and grill. Too bad the original seat is all split up. Nice stuff with it. The sleeve hitch doesn’t need the bracket that the rock shaft is rigged up to in order to work on your series. That bracket is for the 1x6, 1x7 series. Keep it though as they can be difficult to find and you may get one of those models. Picture of what I’m talking about

I also have a 127 with a blown motor and good PTO, and I'm just about an hour from Kaiser's Ridge, MD, these parts are small, and Rt 40 is beautiful on a motorcycle, just saying.

Been looking over the new tractor and takin inventory. It starts on a dime and runs great, PTO seems to engage nicely on the deck. I am going to try and fit the thrower first to see how it runs but at this rate in Maryland, It is unlikely I will need that or the blade but will probably run with the blade.
I need some pointers here.

1) One headlight was cracked and the light switch was froze. I got two new lights, and freed up the switch but no lights. Did find a wire that came of the voltage regulator and I noticed two loose wires at the switch that are no longer connected. The Wiring diagram I found does not show the switch config. Any help.

2) The wheel weights are heavy SOB's solid steel weights. They look home made and the holes are so close but do not line up exactly. What is the best way to enlarge the grooves on solid steel weights? I dont have a drill press but have a angle grinder with cutting wheel? I only have to make them slightly deeper and a bit wider.

3) Would like to install the sleeve hitch and it appears I am in need of the sleeve hitch lift pin. Best Source? Jeff in PA, Extreme Motor works, or...? I also need a bushing but I am assuming I can find one locally. What about the sleeve hitch bracket? I saw one on CL for $75.

Great score on a nicely equipped 124! Go down about half way on the page to find the 1x4/1x5 model wiring diagram, which should help you hooking up your light switch.

Go to the Resources section of the forum, Technical Library for Tractors and on page 5 you will find the Wiring Diagram for NF (Narrow Frames). About half way down the page, you will find the wiring schemata for a 1x4/1x5 tractor...….see if that helps!

Look at the weights carefully, they look like they should fit. Sometimes if they are very heavy they may be hard to hold in place. What I would do is jack up the cub, remove a rear wheel, lay it flat on the ground and then put a wheel weight inside to see if it will work and take measurements if necessary. I would think that some carriage bolts and washers should put you in business with them.

Any place that you want to get a sleeve hitch pin is your choice, should not be a problem. Jeff is a great fella to do business with, as is all of our sponsors.

I can make you a sleeve hitch adapter and the lift pin. My sleeve hitch adapter is heavy duty and haven't heard of anyone bending mine yet. My lift pin is drilled so it can have the lifting hole either vertical or horizontal.

With your rear lift, it looks like all you maybe missing is the bushing that slips in the lift bar when you bolt that bar to the rear lift casting.

It's 3/4" in diameter with a 1/2" clearance hole that is 1/16" thicker than the lift bar.
