I have been restoring an original ( in another thread here) and just mounted up the engine with new wiring harness.
Here is an update on my current charging issue. I opened this thread to get more eyes on it that might not be following my original thread. Thanks Ok so the good news is it starts and runs fine, but it is not charging. I did the basic checks and I am a bit stumped. Basically here is what I have done. Verified good grounds to both engine and the tab on the VR that has the braid to ground. Polarized the SG per instructions Disconnected all leads to the SG and measured 8.2 ohms from F to A tabs Instantaneous jumper to the A stud and SG spins Instantaneous jump to the F stud and the SG stops Pulled the cover on the VR and cleaned the contacts on the relay. Picking the really by does nothing. I know that even when it is working it is very hard to see that really pick and release, but my feeling is it is not picking. double checked wiring Does anyone know what voltage I should get out of the SG on the F tab when it is rotating? |

Did you replace the regulator?

Followed all the instructions including the continuity checks since it was a new harness and when jumping the F terminal to ground and a meter on the battery it jumped up to 13.4 v immediately so I guess the VR needs replacing. It looks like someone did some soldering of the ground braid but metering the VR removed from the tractor there is no obvious open of the ground. Of course there could be a short.
Guess I will get a new VR J the regulator was an old one I had laying around. There was no VR on this when I got it. It was working last year if I recall correctly but nothing I do to it now will get it to work Thank You ! Bill |

Resistance reading tells me that the charge coil inside the s/g is good. Start coil/brushes good obviously because it starts. Sounds like v/r or ground issue on v/r due to new paint. Do as coop stated and ground f and see what output goes to from A terminal. When the f is grounded the normally open contacts inside the v/r should close.
2 different contacts inside v/r. One is normally open and the other normally closed. I had one the other day that wouldn’t charge and I adjusted the pressure on the normally closed side of the contacts to get it to charge at about 13.8. Seeing that you can get a new v/r for mid $20 range it’s not worth messing with sometimes if it turns out to be the issue but the old Delco internals are made much beefier than the Mexinesium ones are today and can be cleaned/adjusted. Edit you beat me by 1 minute Bill

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
