982
I'm looking to buy a heavier duty lawn mower than the 1211 I'm currently using around the farm house and property. I see a 982 with a heavy duty 60" deck, supposedly all original with less than 1,000 hours. It looks real clean and even newer.
Is this series a pretty good, heavy duty lawn mower? How is the engine? It's an Onan according to Tractor Data, and I don't know much about them. I was looking at the 2072s and 2082s that I used to mow lawn with 25 years ago and they were great, heavy duty lawn mowers, but they are a little steep for me. Thanks, Robert

The 982 is basically a bigger version of a 1211. Both tractor use alot of the same parts so ones really not more "heavy duty" than the other. The onan motors are great when the run right but extremely expensive to rebuild and work on so using one as a weekly mower isn't a good plan in my eyes. I would look for an 1811, it will be the same as your 1211 but with an 18hp magnum engine. The mag 18 has a good reputation and the extra power over the 12 will cut you mowing time down since you will be able to mow faster.

If all your looking for is a mower, I'd get a ZTR mower.
982 is nice, but it's a garden tractor, not a speed mower. The frames are prone to break from carrying a 60" deck. It can be remedied, and braces have been designed, and for sale to help prevent it. 982 doesn't have power steering like the other SGT's you mentioned, so keep that in mind. Also keep in mind, a 982 is 35 years old or older. It's going to need some....or a lot.... of work to be a good machine. If you say the other SGT's are out of your price range, I'm surprised this 9 isn't.... usually they are higher than any other SGT. May be a deal, or it may be junk.
