Default Cub Cadet 72 upgrade to 10HP

Hi I have the chance to buy a running Kohler K series 10HP for $50. My Cub 72 with the 7hp is a fine little motor but wouldn't mind the couple extra HP.

Will that fit in my existing frame with little headache or is this a lost cause?

I'm not cutting the frame or any of that. Like my little Cub too much haha.

Thanks!

What is this new motor from? Another cub? Blower housings were different on narrow and wide frame k series as the coil mount is lower on the narrow frame than it is on the wide frame and won't work unless swapped, also a few more subtle differences.

If the 10 horse is from another cub cadet it'll bolt right in. Only real difference will be your throttle cable. It's longer and connects differently on the k161/k181 engines. But it's a very simple fix.

And that is if it's a starter generator 10 horse. If it's a ring gear starter not so simple..

Wouldn't it be a K241? K301 is a 12 HP.

But what's it out of? If it didn't come out of a Cub then it will take some serious work to put it in.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
