Default Just bought my 1st Cub, 1st post, and some ???

I've been lurking for a few days, just looking at all the valuable info on this site. This is my first post.......I bought a model 1872 Cub Cadet the other day. It ran/drove when I looked at it, and I figured it was worth the $300 asking price, so I snagged it up. So far I've changed the engine oil, hydrostat oil, greased everything with a grease zerk. I had to put a tube in the right front tire and replace the oil sender. I think I after I sharpen the blades I will be able to mow with it. I was told it came with a front blade also(He has to dig it out of his garage) I bought it to help out around my property with mowing/landscaping/etc. I still have to figure out why the PTO isn't kicking on when I hit the switch....that will be tomorrow's project. I have a few questions I haven't been able to find an answer for on the forum.
1. It doesn't have a 3 point, did any of the 1872s come with one?
2. Would it be possible to add one? or do I have to go the electric linear actuator route?
3. What all parts make up a sleeve hitch and where could I find one?
4. What are the weak points on this machine, stuff to look out for, besides the rear axle?
5. Any recommended upgrades or mods to this machine to help with usability/performance?

novaman_68 , you got a GREAT DEAL!
I bought an 1872 a few weeks ago, and I have not found any weak points yet. It mows fantastic and is very powerful.
I bought a 3 point hitch from http://www.xtrememotorworks.com/ They make quality products.

As far as the pto not kicking in...it could be a few things. Check your wiring to make sure all the connections are tight. There is a safety switch under the seat that could be bad. The switch on the dash may need replaced. The gap setting on the pto may need adjusted, or maybe its a bad pto.

Good luck with your new Cub!!

Novaman: Welcome to the OCC... The most commonly replaced part in the PTO circuit is the PTO Switch! I bet Roland has posted the wiring diagram for it in the tech section...Do your wire tracing like CBH said and you will find the problem. The Service manual covers the PTO ...I recommend you get one!

$300 for a running super???? Plus a blade??? You stole it! I just ordered and am getting ready to install a Ruegg 3 point (another thread) and Extreme also makes an "A-frame" sleeve hitch adapter for the 3 point hitch. I've been kicking myself that I didn't pickup up a parts 1872 last weekend for $350. It had a replacement engine and kept losing driveshafts (not an issue with the 1872 that I'm aware of) so the previous owner got rid of it. But whats not to like, power steering, Kohler 18 (mag?), hydraulic lift, dual hydraulics(?), and a deck? Is the front blade power angle also?

Yeah no kidding! $300.

Now get you some side panels. BTW no sleeve hitch and no electric actuator anything....others have told you right, get you a cat0 for it and with your luck you'll find one of those cheap too. Also that blade, if it is and it likely is a Haban it's worth $400 to $550 sooooooo....make sure that man digs it out of his garage.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
