Default Grease Question

I usually use general purpose grease in the mower deck spindles and wheel and spindle zerks on my Cubs. I had to fill my grease gun with marine rated grease for a boat trailer, gun was empty anyway and didn't have a 2nd one to put the different grease in. Would anyone worry about using the sticky marine grease on the tractors? I know I would be mixing greases, but wondered if it would be OK in these relatively low stress applications.

I'm sure it will work, but I wouldn't. Spindle speed is pretty high. Better off/ safer using the right stuff. I don't use el-cheapo grease. (or general purpose) Hi-temp only for me. Doesn't break down and turn to oil in the summer. Gp is fine for like the front steering, and axle, but really shouldn't be used in the spindles. Think of them as wheel bearings. Would you put GP grease in a wheel bearing? Again, not going to make a stink/argue. But to me, it's kind of the same argument as oil viscosity in the motor.

Don't know but I would take J-mechs advice.

I only use synthetic grease for everything! It's red & pretty lookin. Doesn't break down like conventional gease. But, that's my opinion.

NIK,

Thanks for the replies! I said general purpose, but really I was using a high temp grease, might pull the old cartridge out of the trash tonight so I can list exactly what it was.

Maybe the better way to ask the question would be to ask if the marine bearing grease is ok to use in deck spindles. It's designed to be super sticky, highly moisture resistant, and handle high temp high pressure wheel bearing loads.

One thing that concerns me is that I've ever actually seen a marine gear housing that had a zerk for bearings. The marine stuff I've seen (which is not a ton of stuff) all has sealed gear cases with drain/fill plugs for oil or is packed in grease during assembly. I'm wondering if "bearing" used in the marine sense really means its rated for the sheer of a wheel bearing or if its used in some other sense. Again, I'm not an expert on marine equipment.

I'd see if the container has an SAE spec on it and look it up to play it safe.

Several have already answered. No matter how you ask, the answer is the same. We don't recommend it.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
