My 124 did not burn oil when I got it about two years ago. One day I pushed a lot of dirt for about 8 hours with it, and the next time I started it, a lot of oil smoke came out of the muffler on startup. Then it started using some oil and had a lot of smoke when it was under a load. I have seen a lot of oil on the front grill and a lot of wet oil on the cooling fins in front. Is this a blown head gasket? It seems to have plenty of power, but I have only used the blade since the problem began. I know I wanted a smoker, but not like this!
Here are some pics.

Yep thats what a blown head gasket looks like if you run it after it blew for a while! Check out the tech section i know there one that covers getting the head flat again and torque sequence after you get to putting to back together! Quick fix you can have it back to running in no time!

I did the same thing with my 73 while plowing heavy snow. Make sure that you buy a quality head gasket--well worth the extra money! Also, it is a good opportunity to decarbonize that head. I use Super Kleen from Wal-Mart to remove build-up, but you will need to use rubber gloves as it removes oil off of your hands, too and you will have alligator skin if you don't!! Look up specs for proper head bolt torque sequence. I usually torque to about 28 lbs.-29 lbs. You should notice a regain of power when you are finished.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
