As you can tell from the questions below this is the first time I have worked on a rear end.
I have a Super rear end with the 1" axles. The casing is bad but I have an 1860 rear that is good. I am going to put in the reduction gear and pump from the super into the 1860 rear end (not the 1860 tractor). I was reading the manual and it says when you pull the reduction housing... and put it back together to use a new Easton retainging ring and expansion plug. My questions are: 1) Can I re-use the Easton ring? It also says to use the same thickness ring. Since I am swaping out parts how will I know what thickness I need? 2) It says to deform the expansion plug evenly. What the h...l does that mean? I see a dimple in the ones that are in there but not sure how to deform it. Tap it with a ball peen hammer?

I took a set of snap ring pliers and notched them to pull the snap ring out, its still tough to do. Ive reused them, as the ones Ive looked up are NLA, but Im sure you can get them somewhere like McMaster Carr. As far as deforming the welch plug, I take a hammer and smack it in the center and it pushes it out to the casting. Im not fimlure with the doner thrans, is that a hydro gear, with the 30mm axles? |

Yes you are right, the donor is a hydro with the 30mm axles. As far as I could tell from the parts diagram on the CC site the ony difference is the reduction gear and the shaft on the hydro pump. I'll know more tomorrow.

I am having a time with this rear cover coming off. I removed all 6 bolts (including the ones on the inside) and retaining ring on the pinion shaft. The seal is broken but I can't get it to budge off the pinion shaft.
Any ideas, or am I missing something?

I'm guessing that the thrust bearing on the pinion shaft is sticking a little bit. I remember having the same problem when i did my conversion, but I removed the rear end and the entire pinion shaft (removing the entire pinion shaft made it easier to work with the bearing)

I got everything switched over Sat but still haven't put it in service.
I did it the hard way but have since learned exactly how to get the pinion shaft out if the bearing is stuck without taking the front cover off. I didn't realize the snap rings on the inside would pop off by knocking the shaft through. Oh well, all is good.
