Got a line on a 682

Need some info. This 682 is pretty clean, no hydraulics, comes with what appears to be a 44c deck in good shape, and ag rear tires. I didn't take a look at the serial, but the rear appears to be cast iron. The engine starts right up, but backfires out of both pipes at high rpm. I saw "Kohler" on the air cleaner cover, so I'm pretty sure it has the original motor. It obviously needs timing and carb adjustment. I didn't see any smoke, but the sun was going down, so I couldn't really tell. If there was any, it wasn't bad. Anyway, the guy wants $500 and he's firm. Since I need a mower anyway, and my 1650 is still under reconstruction, I think I'll go back tomorrow and see if it's still there.

Anything I should know or look for in a 682? Performance-wise, how does it compare to a 1650? Is there any problem adding hydraulics to the 682 down the road? I figure I'll make my 1650 my loader/backhoe tractor and use the 682 for everything else. I have become pretty familiar with the QLs, but I don't know anything about the big red ones.

By the way, did you know you can't search for "682" in this forum? Not enough letters/digits.

i heard they are a good tractor. and i dont think it would be to hard to add hydro lift.

Doesn't sound too bad. Local dealer wants $2500 for a 682 with snow blower and roto-tiller not sure if it has hydraulics? Seems like too much?
I would love to have one. My wifes favorite numbers = 682.

man maybe i was asking to little for my 149 with snow plow & snow blower .$800.00 ..... seems every body is charging for the rust and the parts that arnt there ?

Just wondering, will the implements for my 1650, such as dozer blade and mowing deck interchange with the 682? Mules the same? Going back to look at the 682 in the daylight shortly. I want to check serial numbers and take a better look at the deck.

In looking at prices for hydraulic components, I'm wondering whether I should wait and just find a 782. Still, for a good deck and good ags, the price seems decent, even if the tractor wasn't in good shape (which it is).

Figured out last night part of the reason why the engine was backfiring so much. No muffler. Running straight pipes right out of the jug. A little backpressure from a muffler, some timing adjustment, and a carb overhaul should fix that right up.

Sorry about asking questions I know have been handled before. I have read threads on them in the past, but my memory is slipping and the searches aren't turning up anything.

The 82 series cub's are great. Smoothness of the twin engine, controls more ergonomically laid out. Most all of your implements for your Quiet line will work on the 682. The only difference between the two is that the 82 series uses a 5/8 PTO belt. Yes you can convert it over to a hydraulic lift if you wanted. Just have to purchase the stuff to do it with. For the amount you said he wants for it, unless it is a piece of junk it is worth that. Hope to see what you ended up doing.

Thanks, DX3. That helps a lot. Money is in hand, but it's raining right now. I'll need to make sure everything works before I hand the cash over. I'll post some pics once I get it home.

Bought it. Didn't have time to get pictures this evening.

Needs a carb overhaul, tune-up, and a muffler. Goodness, I don't think I'd have bought it if I'd known a muffler runs $230!!!!!! I figured that would be a $30 part!

Anybody make an aftermarket muffler for the KT17?
