Hey guys,
Picked up a Cub Cadet 169 last week while up at my hunting camp in northern PA. My neighbor (who lives there year round) had an old beat up 129 sitting in his "to be scrapped" pile. It was missing everything. We got chatting about old Cub's and he told me his work buddy has this old cub for sale that looks like his junk 129. He calls his buddy and he tells me its a 149 he thinks. Price sounded workable so I go look at it in between deer hunting. To my surprise it is a 169 not a 149. It is well used and sat much of it life outside in the harsh PA mountain weather but I think it has potential. It runs well with no smoke. He was selling the 169 with a 50" deck, original wheel weights, hydraulic lift, sleeve hitch, original 16 HP engine (I checked on my smart phone quickly) a 1A tiller with the belt and belt guard and a #2 tiller. Said he was cleaning out. I figured it was out of my price range. Well needless to say, I bought it and the attachments. Any guesses on the price? I thought it was a good deal. Oh, BTW yes the front axle is broke. Wasn't but was cracked and ground out by the pulley which I didn't see till I drove it around my yard and hit a hole in my yard. Well I got an axle for $40.00 this week. |

Isn't the 169 kind of rare? |

I am guessing its not the original air cleaner. Aren't the air cleaners on the 169's different?

Nice score on the 169! You are correct. The air cleaner is wider on the 169 cubs.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
