Hear ya Dave, my Sears Suburban project has had its number of stalls, but I've never quit entirely. I need to get my shop heated as well.

This is why I am always afraid to start a project like this. I hope you get back into it. Whether you finish the tractor or not, you have given us all a huge amount of information.

If your are out at 0.040 with your points this seems to be very excessive. I would expect a normal range to be 0.015 - 0.025. The 0.040 may also indicate you are off by a tooth.
Yeah, I thought that was a key observation Mike, thanks for the feedback.

I just can't believe I left that thing off by a tooth. How frustrating. I had to pull the crank and put it back in several times to get the shimming right on the bearing plate, and each time I ogled those darned alignment marks until I was cross-eyed. Guess the last time got me. aaaarrrrgh.

That's they way things often go for me. At least you know how to take it a apart and put t back together. With all that practice it should be pretty easy for you.

Default Back to work

OK fellas, time to get back to the project. Nothing motivates me like having to push-mow my lawn again...

So I need to pull the K341 back out of its temporary home in the 1450, to open it up and check my timing / crank alignment.

I'm assuming I'll need to buy a whole new kit of gaskets and seals to do this, even though the last ones have really only run 20 minutes.

Agreed? What about the head gasket? It's the Kohler OEM and cost $17 or so, and since it wasn't run much I'm thinking I can still use it rather than replacing...

I wouldnt worry about the headgasket, if its only been run a few minutes its not enough IMO to worry about replacing. I usually torque it down 1 or 2 ft pounds more for peace of mind

Some of the engine gaskets may need replacing, depends if you use gasket sealer on them or not. If you did, Id avise replacing them. If you are careful, you might get by without replacing seals. Just my .02. Ive been in the same boat, the best way to learn is to learn from your mistakes when it comes to Cubs and engines.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
