Maybe I am just being pickey but I saw no assembly lube on anything. I really would not advise starting that with a dry components.

I usually smear some grease on the cam lobes before buttoning it up.

How well did you lube the rings before you installed the piston? The way my dad taught me to do it (and the way he always did it, and the way his dad had done it) was to get a coffee can, put enough oil in to cover all of the rings on the piston when it it is placed head first in the can, and then dunk the piston/ring assembly in there and spin the rings a bit to make absolutely certain they have enough oil in them. It may not be the case, but your piston looks nearly dry in the pictures.

I think that picture with the ring compressor on it was taken before I lubed up the piston - like I put the ring compressor on there for a trial run and pictures before assembly.

I put some new oil in a one gallon ziploc bag, and parts were placed in that bag and rolled around in oil before installation. I would have stuck the piston into the bag and rolled it until all surfaces were well oiled.

Well, got to say that I have thoroughly enjoyed this post and all of the incredible details that you have included. Wish there was a way to save ALL of it in PDF form for the future. You have done and outstanding job with the documentation for this project.

And, all of the help that everyone on here so willingly offers is just awesome.

I have a 982 that I can't wait to get a motor for get running. I am going to try and document what I do..........like you did. But you have raised the bar pretty high my friend, so I will try to do mine half as good as you.

Can't wait to hear the details for when you fire it up. I think that the running of the motor in the tractor will certainly be worthy of a video.........

Thanks for taking the time to post all of this, I am sure that this stuff will help others along with future projects.

Joe

Putting all of this into a PDF should be relatively straightforward, if a little tedious. I played around some with the thread's first page .... seems to work fine.

Dave, do you mind if I try to capture all of this, including your photos, into a document that can be posted? It would have to be updated as you make further progress. I myself plan to (eventually) do my 1650, and maybe the 1250.

Without removing all of the photos in the sigs and other extraneous webpage control icons, buttons, etc., this thread comes in at 632 (!) pages.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
