At this point, I'm leaning toward putting it together and running it. It's going to make me nervous for some time, though...

Ditto, put it together and run it, the shim that sets there should be stationary anyhow (I guess it could spin every now and then, but most of the time it should just be sitting ther occupying space), they are there to keep the cam from moving back and forth in the engine as it runs, so as the end of the cam spins, the shim will be the wear edge for the cam, not the broken area of the block.

I'm getting the impression a lot of guys don't want to touch this
![]() For all we know, this could have been a factory defect and it's run fine all these years. I'm going to take some measurements and draw up a sketch of what we're looking at here, as far as the pin and its position in the block. |

Yesterday I emailed pictures of it to the machinist. I just talked to him and he said to go ahead and put it together as well.
He said that there's a small "v" cut into that spot from the factory, to allow oil to get in there on the shimming washers and all. So it looks like the "v" was what chipped out. Another good point he made is that the pin doesn't even press-fit into that side of the engine. All of the pressure and tension is on the PTO side of the block. I'm feeling better about going ahead with it. |

Actually, I did drive that pin out the right way in the first place. The pin is supposed to come out from the PTO side to the bearing plate side. I got confused where it reads "out of the crankcase from the PTO side" but now looking at the image, you can see that the pin is coming OUT of the bearing plate side:
![]() Of course it comes out that way, the PTO side is the press-fit side. |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
